This was a personal narrative I wrote for English class this week.
Sorry, it's kind of long, but I'm sort of happy with it.
It’s your first day of sophomore year. You’ve been at this school your entire life, so you’re not nervous about the coming year, just aggravated that you’re back in the same old routine again. It’s always the same thing, day after day. You wake up, go to school, go to basketball practice, then come home, eat a quick dinner, and go do homework until two o’clock in the morning. It’s been like that since the fifth grade. Then it all happens again, and again, and again—for days, and your simply unable to break out of this daily routine.
This simple routine is pure hell. Meanwhile at school, you have plenty of friends, but they’re not real. You can’t tell them anything that’s going on in your life for fear that they might laugh at your mistakes and problems. You keep all your problems inside you because you have no one; you’re alone. It’s as if you are the only person on the earth at a certain point, and no one is there to help you through the hardest times of your life.
The thing that exacerbates this feeling even more is that you’re always there for everyone else, yet they seem to never return the favor. When your best friend is crying in the hallway because she got an F on her math test, you’re always right there by her side to comfort her. When the girl you’ve never talked to before needs someone to talk to because her friends are all on vacation, you’re the one to go up and offer to talk to her because it’s just a polite thing to do.
Besides these “friends” you have, school isn’t even going very well. It’s a struggle every day, and most days you come home crying because it seems as if you can’t do any better in math and all you do is try harder, day after day, yet nothing changes. Everything is going wrong, constantly, and you have no one and nothing to help you fix it and make things better.
You decide you need to get away from everything, or else you’ll keep having thoughts about suicide and you’ll continue to feel depressed. You need a change from the daily old routine that you’ve had for all your life at the same school and in the same building. 14 years of being the same person could be over.
The day after you decide that you need to get out of this life you’ve been living, a woman comes to your school. She has blonde hair and is about your height and she carried a bag of Hershey Kisses around with her. You see her walk down the hallway and end up in the “big math room,” as all of the girls at the school call that classroom. The entire sophomore classroom walks in and the woman hands each girl a Hershey Kiss and tells the girls to eat it. She asks them ethical questions about chocolates, and you’re thinking this is probably the coolest place in the world. If only you could go there next year.
Afterwards, the blonde-haired woman asks that everyone who was interested in the program should write her address, e-mail, and name on a sheet of paper so that the program could contact them with more information. You see the names written on that list…Terah Coleman, Kate Scheer, and Jenna Bailey. Crap…there’s no way you’ll get in because those girls will apply, and they are prettier, smarter, and do more activities outside of school than you. The weeks pass, and your nervous because you want to know if you will get into this life-changing program. You think every day “what’s going to happen if I don’t get into this program?” But finally, you arrive in Santorini, Greece and your mom calls you as you are celebrating Easter on the island and says you got in. Oh my gosh.
You get home and read the letter that will change your life in ways you don’t know yet. You just know that it will. You decide no matter what, you’re going to leave this place and go to Washington, DC. to change the way you have been living your life for the past 14 years.
You arrive in Washington, DC and meet your roommate, Tyler, because she got there first. She’s really kind and you can’t wait to spend the next four months with her. Vanina arrives next and she seems really shy, but you think she’ll break out of her shell and be completely different a couple weeks from now. You leave the house with the group and go to the academic for orientation and meet the rest of the people that will somehow change your life after this is all over.
Months go by and you realize that this place made you feel happy again. Wow…you didn’t expect to ever feel that way. You meet real friends. You meet your best friend Andrew and he helps you when you were at the lowest point. You tell everything that was building up inside to him and he listens and helps you through it all. You met Jon and Marcy too, and on the first Saturday of the semester, you had a five-hour conversation with them and learned their life stories after only one week of knowing them. They tell you things they haven’t even told their best friends at home who
independent study/applying virtual make up/after
The tutorial I chose taught me how to apply affects that appear as if the person is wearing make-up. The first thing I learned how to use the magnetic lasso tool more effectively. Then I had to create a new layer for the make up. I also had to change settings in the layers pallet. I had to change 2 things in the layers pallet and they were changing the blend mode to hue, and the opacity to 55%. I used these steps to manipulate the effect of eye shadow and lip stick and also changed the eye color.
